    Teachers\u27 Use of YouTube in the United Arab Emirates: An Exploratory Study

    Teachers around the world are using YouTube movies for different purposes. This mixed-methods study was a preliminary investigation of United Arab Emirates teachers\u27 perceptions about YouTube\u27s advantages in the classroom, current practices, and major challenges faced. Forty-five teachers completed an open-ended questionnaire. Results indicated that perceived advantages included supporting the learning process, increasing interest and efficiency, and enriching content. Moreover, findings revealed that the majority of participants were using videos for presentation purposes in teacher-led classrooms. Connectivity, technical issues, appropriateness of content, and administrative support were perceived as major challenges. © 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC

    An Assortment of Evolutionary Computation Techniques (AECT) in gaming

    © 2020, Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature. Real-time strategy (RTS) games differ as they persist in varying scenarios and states. These games enable an integrated correspondence of non-player characters (NPCs) to appear as an autodidact in a dynamic environment, thereby resulting in a combined attack of NPCs on human-controlled character (HCC) with maximal damage. This research aims to empower NPCs with intelligent traits. Therefore, we instigate an assortment of ant colony optimization (ACO) with genetic algorithm (GA)-based approach to first-person shooter (FPS) game, i.e., Zombies Redemption (ZR). Eminent NPCs with best-fit genes are elected to spawn NPCs over generations and game levels as yielded by GA. Moreover, NPCs empower ACO to elect an optimal path with diverse incentives and less likelihood of getting shot. The proposed technique ZR is novel as it integrates ACO and GA in FPS games where NPC will use ACO to exploit and optimize its current strategy. GA will be used to share and explore strategy among NPCs. Moreover, it involves an elaboration of the mechanism of evolution through parameter utilization and updation over the generations. ZR is played by 450 players with varying levels having the evolving traits of NPCs and environmental constraints in order to accumulate experimental results.     Tooth brushing, tongue cleaning and snacking behaviour of dental technology and therapist students

    Objective: To determine the tooth brushing, tongue cleaning and snacking behaviour of dental technology and therapist students. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study of students of Federal School of Dental Therapy and Technology Enugu, Nigeria. Self-administered questionnaire was used to obtain information on demography, frequency, duration and technique of tooth brushing and tongue cleaning as well as information on consumption of snacks. Results: A total of 242 students responded. Dental technology students made up 52.5% of the respondents and dental therapist in training made up 47.5%. Majority (63.2%) of the respondents considered the strength of tooth brush when purchasing a tooth brush and 78.9% use tooth brushes with medium strength. Seven-tenth (71.9%) of the respondents brush their teeth twice daily and 52.1% brush for 3–5 minutes. About one-third (30.2%) brush their teeth in front of a mirror. Chewing stick was used by 51.7% of respondents in addition to the use of tooth brush. Tongue cleaning was done by 94.2% with only 9.5% using a tongue cleaner. Only 20.2% reported regular snacks consumption. Nine-tenth (90.4%) of respondents were previously involved in educating others, apart from their colleagues, on tooth brushing. Conclusion: This survey revealed that most of the dental therapy and technology students had satisfactory tooth-brushing behaviour. The zeal to educate others about proper tooth brushing revealed in this study suggests that the students may be helpful in oral health promotion

    Learning from Multiple Observers with Unknown Expertise

    Abstract. Internet has emerged as a powerful technology for collecting labeled data from a large number of users around the world at very low cost. Consequently, each instance is often associated with a handful of labels, precluding any assessment of an individual user’s quality. We present a probabilistic model for regression when there are multiple yet some unreliable observers providing continuous responses. Our approach simultaneously learns the regression function and the expertise of each observer that allow us to predict the ground truth and observers ’ responses on the new data. Experimental results on both synthetic and real-world data sets indicate that the proposed method has clear advantages over “taking the average ” baseline and some state-of-art models.

    Maximum Rigid Components as Means for Direction-Based Localization in Sensor Networks

    Abstract. Many applications in sensor networks require positional information of the sensors. Recovering node positions is closely related to graph realization problems for geometric graphs. Here, we address the case where nodes have angular information. Whereas Bruck et al. proved that the corresponding realization problem together with unitdisk-graph-constraints is NP-hard [2], we focus on rigid components which allow both efficient identification and fast, unique realizations. Our technique allows to identify maximum rigid components in graphs with partially known rigid components using a reduction to maximum flow problems. This approach is analyzed for the two-dimensional case, but can easily be extended to higher dimensions.
